How Solar Panels Work
Here's A Simple Model Of How Solar Works

Some months your system will produce more electricity than you use, other months you'll use more than you produce. The months that you use less, will result in getting a credit on your electric bill. The months you use more, you will use those credits (essentially getting back the electricity you sent in). 

This process is called Net Metering.

Each electricity provider has their own Net Metering rules. Some buy back the electricity you send them at retail (meaning you are essentially trading power on equal terms).

Other providers buy the electricity you send them at wholesale (meaning that you'll get a portion of the electricity back for free, but not all of it).
